Urban Vegetable Gardening Resources
I know nothing about ornamental plants and flowers — the sites and pages in this list are most helpful for growing food in urban areas.
There is nothing like eating the fruits, vegetables, and herbs that you grow yourself. Whether you’ve got a real backyard, some patio space, or just a window box, you can grow something. I’m a beginner, and I’ll post veggie gardening resources as I find out about them. Here is my list of good sources so far:
Food4Wealth – Ecological Vegetable Gardening Ebook & Video Guide
This $40 ebook was a great jump-start for me. I started off knowing only that you had to water plants and ended up reasonably confident in my ability to transform my crabgrass into productive land. Even with my bad soil, indirect light, and tiny yard. Highly recommended — read full review here.

Super Cheap Bokashi Composting Tutorial
This looks like a “ghost town” blog, so I’m not 100% confident in how much longer it will be online, but it is a great resource for anyone who wants to do Bokashi composting really cheaply. As with anything, low money cost is traded for higher work and time cost, so I prefer to get the kits. Still, the knowledge is there for anyone who wants to try it.
Gardenweb
Gardenweb is good if you have a specific question or are searching for a specific topic, such as how to keep squirrels out of your tomatoes. Otherwise, it’s kind of a confusing site, and it’s one giant forum. Though most people have good intentions, I’ve seen a lot of conflicting or just plain wrong “facts.”
Kitchen Garden Company
Really interesting reading for people who like to cook and eat. Also Bokashi composters with a lot of good info on how to do it, with photos. From their website:
“The Kitchen Garden Company is a small company dedicated to educating consumers about foods and ingredients through culinary classes, workshops, cooking services and podcasting.”
BokashiCycle
When I’m more familiar with Bokashi composting, I may choose to make my own Bokashi meal out of newspaper, like in the website above. But the whole reason I chose Bokashi was its neatness and low indoor space requirements, and the easy, ready-made kits that are available. Soaking the newspaper in homemade solution takes a lot of space and a lot of extra mess… I don’t think my housemates would welcome my taking over the kitchen for days.
